How Lunch Can Save Your Marriage

January 22, 2018

Most people expect their marriage to be easy.

The truth is, it isn’t.

But did you know that there is one thing that you can do right now to strengthen your marriage, no matter what state it is in?

I had a couple come into my office who was fussing about everything. They couldn’t even agree on whether to seek counseling or not. Do you know what got them going in the right direction? I recommended that they temporarily pause talking about their problems and simply go on a lunch date.

Their instructions where to simply talk about current events and topics that interested them for 30 minutes with no mention of life stressors or issues.

When they returned to therapy, they were both smiling. Why? Part of the reason they were fussing is that their relationship lacked “oxygen” in the form of quality time.

The truth is, we tend to argue more when we don/t get enough quality time with one another. Life can literally kidnap the quality time away from your marriage. You deserve more time to connect as a couple. So, open up your smart phones and calendars and schedule your next date with your better half.

Imagine how much more enjoyable your marriage will be when you actually pay attention to one another and do life together.

Psalm 139:1 reads, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.” When we take the time to consistent “know” (spend time with) our spouses, our relationships will benefit greatly.

Great lunch dates are just one of the things we cover in a program I call Fix My Marriage.

Check out this page for more tips on how you can improve your marriage – because lunch dates are just one of them.

P.S.- Before children, my wife and I had a revolving Thursday evening date night. Now that we have two girls, we have shifted to Wednesday lunch dates to spend time together without the kids. I can tell you that it has meant the world to us. To give our marriage oxygen with no distractions has really connected us is ways you can only imagine. Try it for yourself and let me know how it goes.
